Splash Animations is a small Kurdish-English animation production company based in Hull, England, and supported by the Goodwin Development Trust. Our first film, which will be released later in 2008, will be The Legend of Kawa the Blacksmith, based on the celebrated story behind the Kurdish Newroz.

Splash hopes this film will be the first of many productions.

NEW AND EXCLUSIVE FOOTAGE

We here at Splash Animations are proud to present a further clip from The Legend of Kawa the Blacksmith, this time showcasing the vocal talents of the cast and the lip-synced speech of the characters in the film.

As far as we are aware, The Legend of Kawa the Blacksmith will be the first full animated film anywhere in the world created and recorded in Kurdish with full Kurdish lip-syncing. A full English version of the story will also be available as part of the DVD’s features. To see the Kurdish version of this clip, and to compare the two, please go to the Kurdish version of the site through the menu at the top of this page.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Splash Animations are excited to announce that Rozh Ahmad of Brwska Productions has been filming behind the scenes on The Legend of Kawa the Blacksmith for several months now and interviewing producers, actors and musicians to produce a thirty-five minute feature that looks at the making of both versions of the film.

This in-depth documentary will cover almost every aspect of the film-making process, including writing the script, the choice of language used in the Kurdish version of the film, creating and texturing the models and characters, composing the film’s specially written music and the problems this presented, and talking with some of the actors about their roles, the auditioning process and their thoughts on the film.

The documentary will be in both English and Kurdish, with on-screen subtitles throughout so that everybody can understand.

It is hoped that the full documentary will be included on the DVD of The Legend of Kawa the Blacksmith as a bonus feature.

KAWA PREVIEW AT THE OCTAGON

Octagon CentreStuart & Havi on stage

As part of an event at Hull’s Octagon Centre to launch Refugee Week on Sunday 15th June, Stuart Palmer and Havi Ibrahim of Splash Animations gave a short talk about The Legend of Kawa the Blacksmith before showing a five minute clip from the animated film.

The clip generated a lot of attention, and both Stuart and Havi were subsequently interviewed by West Hull Community Radio and by local newspaper The Hull Daily Mail.

The event was well attended by local residents, and refugees from across the world, including many Kurds.

As well as the Kawa film clip, there were also fashion shows, live music, dancing and free food from a variety of countries. It was wonderful to see people from many different backgrounds and cultures coming together to enjoy themselves - something we at Splash Animations firmly support.

The clip from The Legend of Kawa the Blacksmith was very well received by the audience, and they are looking forward to seeing both films in their entirety later this year.

SPLASH AND THE MEDIA

With the project now almost completed, international press interest in the film, and our production company, continues to grow.

Following on from the articles in Xebat, Peyamner and Evro Press, there has now been further coverage of the film in eKurd, Qubadi, Rudaw, Amanjj, and the Hull Daily Mail. As reported last time, this has led to interest from some Kurdish TV stations, such as Kurdistan TV, Duhok, and Vin TV, satellite station. We hope for further interest in the build up to the film’s release.
